Learning a language is about much more than vocabulary and grammar. For Rowan, it is about connecting with people, understanding different cultures and creating opportunities that can take you anywhere in the world.
Inspired by a quote from Nelson Mandela, Rowan believes language has the power to bring people together in a unique way.
“If you speak to someone in your language, it goes to their head, but if you speak to someone in their own language, it goes to their heart.”
That belief is what drew him to studying Languages at Truro and Penwith College, where he has found a supportive environment that has helped him grow both academically and personally.
“My favourite thing about the College is the supportive environment,” Rowan said. “The teachers really want to see you succeed. They care about your development and it’s not just about the grades, it’s also about becoming a better version of yourself every day.”
Alongside his studies, Rowan has embraced opportunities to turn his passion into something meaningful. With support from those around him, he has been developing a language-learning app designed to make learning more accessible for students.
“Everyone’s been so supportive towards what I’ve been working on,” he explained. “The idea is to make language learning free, fun and accessible to everyone.”
For Rowan, that sense of encouragement has been one of the most valuable parts of College life. Being surrounded by people who share similar ambitions and who genuinely want each other to succeed has given him the confidence to pursue his ideas and think creatively about his future.
He also believes that enjoying the learning process is key to success.
“My advice would be to make it fun. Learning comes naturally when you’re enjoying it.”
Looking ahead, Rowan plans to combine his love of languages with his desire to explore the world. After College, he hopes to travel, meet new people and experience different cultures first-hand. He is already working towards a teaching English as a Foreign Language qualification, which he hopes will allow him to teach abroad in the future. For Rowan, studying Languages has been about more than gaining qualifications. It has been about becoming part of a supportive community, building confidence and developing skills that will help him connect with people wherever life takes him.
