Sonny and Richard have been drawn to language learning for as long as they can remember, and Spanish at Truro and Penwith College has taken that further than either expected.

With Hungarian and Romanian already spoken at home, Richard says it gave him “a new ability to compare Spanish culture to my own culture,” while Sonny’s own connection to the subject runs back a generation, to a grandad once taught by the same teacher, Laura.

Both are quick to credit the Spanish department, small compared to bigger subjects, but, as they put it, with “so much to offer.” Helen gets singled out as “honestly just like a wizard” for keeping the class engaged, teaching them, they say, how to read between the lines, in Spanish and in life.

With their exams behind them, Sonny is off to the University of Bath to study Spanish and Mandarin, and Richard to Cardiff University to study English Literature and Spanish, another year of students finding their place at Truro and Penwith College, continuing a 30-year legacy of transforming lives across Cornwall.
