“I think it’ll really feel real when I put that uniform on for the first time and I see a Norland Nanny. That’s when I’ll think, ‘Wow, I’ve actually made it.’”

What’s next:
Training with Norland to become a qualified Norland Nanny.
When Iris received the email confirming that she had been offered a place with Norland, one of the most prestigious childcare training providers in the world, it was a moment she will never forget.
“I was just so thrilled,” she said. “I don’t think it felt real.”
The achievement was celebrated not only by Iris, but by the lecturers who have supported her throughout her journey at Truro and Penwith College.
“All my lecturers were really excited for me.”
Currently studying the T Level in Education & Childcare on the Early Years pathway, Iris credits the course with helping her develop the skills, experience and confidence needed to pursue her ambitions.
One of the aspects she values most is the balance between classroom learning and practical experience.
“This course is good because it’s so varied. The practical experience is amazing. We spend a couple of days a week in a nursery or childcare setting.”
These industry placements have given Iris the opportunity to apply her learning in real-world environments, building valuable experience while developing a deeper understanding of working with children and families.
The course also offers a range of assessment methods, allowing students to demonstrate their strengths in different ways.
“There are a variety of different assessment methods, so you can showcase your knowledge in whatever way works for you.”
Alongside gaining practical skills, Iris has found a strong sense of community through the course, connecting with people who share her passion for early years education.
“Meeting so many people with the same passion as you and connecting over that, and making lots of friends, has been really important.”
That feeling of belonging, combined with the support of experienced lecturers, has played a significant role in her success.
“All my lecturers are really passionate about what they teach. They’re subject specialists, highly qualified and experienced.”
Looking ahead to the next stage of her journey, Iris is excited about the opportunities that a Norland qualification can provide.
“There are some quite high-profile families that look for Norland Nannies, or you can take that degree and really do anything within childcare with it. It opens so many doors for you.”
For Iris, working with children is about much more than a career. It is about making a difference to families and understanding the responsibility that comes with caring for young children.
“Don’t forget how much of an honour it is for parents and carers to leave their children with you. It’s a huge privilege.”
She believes that building trust and providing the highest standard of care should always be at the heart of the profession.
“Parents need to feel safe leaving their child with you and feel that their child is in good hands. You need to give your best self to these families.”
As Iris prepares to begin her Norland training, she leaves College with industry experience, lifelong friendships and the confidence to pursue a career she is passionate about. Her story shows how a T Level can open doors, build confidence and provide a direct route into an exciting and rewarding future.
