The STEM and Health Skills Centre in Bodmin brings together students from a wide range of courses, creating a community where future engineers, healthcare professionals and technical specialists learn alongside one another.

While they may be studying different subjects, students share a common experience: access to exceptional facilities, hands-on learning and a supportive environment that helps them thrive.

For Health students, one of the biggest highlights is training in realistic clinical environments that mirror the healthcare settings they may work in one day.

“When I came to an Open Day, I was really impressed,”. “Everything here is very similar to what you would find in a hospital.”

The specialist equipment helps students gain practical experience and confidence in their skills from the very beginning.

“Our training equipment is incredibly realistic,”

“It helps make learning feel much more authentic and prepares us for real-life situations.”

The Health course also provides students with a broad understanding of the healthcare sector, allowing them to explore different career pathways before deciding on their future direction.

Engineering students value the opportunity to move beyond theory and gain hands-on experience using professional equipment within the workshop.

“When I came to an Open Day, I saw so many opportunities here compared to anywhere else I looked,”

“It’s a great opportunity because you actually get to use the machines, not just learn about them.”

Students say the practical nature of their courses gives them a clearer understanding of where their interests lie and helps them make informed decisions about future careers.

“You are given so many opportunities to learn different skills,”

“It helps you figure out what you enjoy most and what area you want to go into.”

Beyond the specialist facilities, it is the sense of community that stands out across the centre. As students work together on projects, practical tasks and group activities, they naturally build friendships and confidence.

“As you get more comfortable working in groups, you make friends with everyone,”

“I’ve become much more confident and comfortable around other people, including the teachers.”

Students also praise the support they receive from staff, describing the centre as a welcoming environment where everyone is encouraged to succeed.

“All the staff are super friendly,”

“If you need help, they’re always there. It’s a really positive environment and everyone is cheerful and supportive.”

The smaller, community-focused atmosphere means students quickly get to know one another and feel comfortable asking for support whenever they need it.

“You get to know everyone really well and get that one-to-one help from staff.”

For many, the experience feels very different from school. Students enjoy the independence, practical learning and supportive culture that allows them to develop both personally and professionally.

“I’d definitely recommend coming to the STEM and Health Skills Centre,”

“It’s completely different to school. Everyone is so friendly and you’re treated differently. It’s the best place to come.”

Together, these students show that the STEM and Health Skills Centre is more than a place to study. It is a community where students from different disciplines come together, support one another and gain the skills, confidence and experience needed to build successful futures.
