Lenny has always been into cooking, and the plating side of it in particular. Studying hospitality at Truro and Penwith College has given him a qualification that will help him for life, and a lot more besides.

Coming from a small school, the campus felt like a big change at first. But catering students only spend most of their time in a few buildings, so it quickly feels manageable, and the longer he’s been there, the more settled he’s become and the more people he’s met. He says the lecturers are really nice and helpful, and working side by side in the kitchen means you can’t help but get close. You end up becoming mates with everyone in your group.

Getting out to events has been a highlight. Lenny worked at Rock Oyster last year and is going back with the college this year. It’s also where he met Joe, head chef at Housel Bay Hotel who ended up helping him land his job, and he loved how friendly the chefs were. He says it’s good to meet so many different chefs working in the industry and see all the different food.

Lenny also noticed that a lot of people who choose catering lack a bit of confidence. He didn’t think that applied to him, but the course has brought it out even more. His advice for anyone thinking about joining: come and have a look around, talk to the lecturers, and give it a go.
