Achieving an outstanding D*D*D* in the Level 3 Diploma in Music Performance, Tom is celebrating the successful completion of his studies and looking ahead to the next stage of his musical journey.
The former St Ives School student was drawn to the College by its excellent facilities and has spent the last two years developing his skills as a performer, songwriter and recording artist, taking full advantage of opportunities to perform, record and collaborate with like-minded musicians.
Tom is now considering progression to Trinity College London, where he hopes to continue studying music, expand his industry knowledge and build professional connections. Alongside further study, he plans to continue developing his local studio work and growing his swing-jazz alt-rock band, The Devil’s Company, through live performances and new releases.
His ultimate goal is clear. “I want to make music less of a hobby and more of a job.”
One of the aspects of the course Tom valued most was the strong sense of community among students. Arriving at College without knowing many people, he quickly found himself surrounded by musicians who shared his passion for music. “The whole group is very like-minded. I didn’t know many people when I came here and by the end of my first week, I got on well with everyone.”
Throughout his studies, Tom also benefited from access to industry-standard facilities and equipment, helping him gain practical experience that can be difficult and expensive to access independently. “You have a chance to use a lot of equipment and regularly access studio time which would be very expensive outside of the College.”
Tom credits the course lecturers with helping him develop both his technical skills and confidence as a performer. Through hands-on teaching, live performance opportunities and exposure to the music industry, he was able to gain valuable experience both on and off the stage.
Regular opportunities to perform locally helped him build confidence in front of audiences while developing the professional skills needed to pursue a career in music.
Looking back on his time at College, his advice to future students is simple: “Stick with music. You’re going to pick up many useful musical skills in your time here.”
As he prepares for the next chapter, Tom leaves College with outstanding results, strong industry connections, lasting friendships and a clear vision for his future in music.
