FdA Silversmithing and Jewellery

The only specialist Silversmithing and Jewellery course in the South West. This course provides a practical learning experience from which you will develop the skills to create and manufacture items of jewellery and silverware.

This industry centred course, in which all assignments have direct links to professional standards, will provide you with the knowledge and level of skills to work within a supervised jewellery workshop.

This course is suitable for any candidate who wishes to develop employment within the jewellery industry at a technical level. Creativity and hands-on making skills are developed through practical assignments in industry-standard workshops, as well as gaining an understanding of the wider context of jewellery design and the organisation of the industry. To further explore the current industry, you will have the chance to visit jewellery centres in Birmingham, Sheffield or Hatton Garden in London as well as exploring the local resources to accumulate both contextual and technical information.

Developing traditional craftmanship

You have the opportunity to develop traditional craftsmanship in areas such as raising, planishing, box making, making settings and findings, setting stones as well as researching new technologies.

What Will I Learn?

The first year consists of introductory modules which develop research, drawing and design skills along with the development of practical workshop skills. The second year modules develop an increasingly individual, personal and professional response.

Where Will It Take Me?

This course prepares you with the development of skills suitable for working in the jewellery/silversmithing industry at a technician level.

Many past students are working in the jewellery/craft industry as craftsmen in established workshops.

The BA Top up Hons Degree in Silversmithing and Jewellery is the intended progression from the FdA Silversmithing and Jewellery.

Assessment Arrangements

All module assessments are practical and take place throughout the academic year.

Entry Requirements

48 UCAS points including a minimum equivalency of one A Level, in addition to GCSE English and Maths at Grade C/4 or above.
