Rebecca Williams, a recent BA (Hons) Applied Media graduate from the University Centre Truro and Penwith, has earned an Honourable Mention in the ballet section of the prestigious International Photography Awards.
The annual photography competition aims to recognise and honour outstanding photographers on a global scale and is judged by a panel of experienced and accomplished professionals in the field.
Expressing her delight at finding out about the honourable mention, Rebecca shared: “I am absolutely thrilled with this International Photography Award. Working with the amazing dancer and the media department at the University Centre has been a fantastic experience.”
The recognition comes for one of the captivating images that Rebecca showcased at the University Centre Degree Show which takes place annually at the Hall for Cornwall. The featured photograph stars Jacy Keddie, a dancer who pursued her National Diploma in Dance at Truro College before advancing to the London Contemporary Dance School.
Returning to education as a mature student and being a single parent meant that Rebecca needed something flexible that fitted her career goals. After taking the Foundation Art Diploma at the Truro College Treye campus and finding out that the degrees at the University Centre are timetabled into two days per week, Rebecca enrolled on the Foundation Degree in Film, Media and Photography before progressing to the BA (Hons) Applied Media.
Reflecting on her experience, Rebecca stated: “Attending the University Centre and pursuing degrees as a mature student was a transformative journey for me. It provided the opportunity to spread my wings and pursue my aspirations of being a movement and fine art photographer.”
After graduating at Truro Cathedral in October under the Gaia exhibition, Rebecca has progressed to a Masters in Fine Art at Arts University Plymouth and plans to continue her career as a multimedia photographer specialising in capturing movement.
