A new Level 3 Civil Engineering Technician Apprenticeship is set to launch in Cornwall this October, marking a significant step forward in addressing the region’s skills shortage in construction and civil engineering. Developed in partnership by Cormac and Truro and Penwith College, the programme will offer vital training opportunities for individuals looking to build careers in one of Cornwall’s most in-demand sectors.

With Cornwall’s infrastructure needs growing rapidly, this apprenticeship aims to develop a new generation of highly skilled technicians equipped to meet the challenges of local engineering and construction projects. The 30-month programme combines Cormac’s industry expertise with Truro and Penwith College’s high-quality teaching. Delivered from the College’s state-of-the-art facilities at their Truro campus, the programme offers a blend of classroom-based learning and hands-on experience on Cormac’s projects across the region.

The launch of this apprenticeship represents a major step towards addressing the skills gap in Cornwall’s civil engineering sector. By delivering the programme locally, it helps retain talent within the county while providing local employers with a pipeline of highly trained professionals. As Cornwall experiences increasing demand for infrastructure development, apprentices will contribute directly to the region’s growth and prosperity. This initiative ensures that local companies, including Cormac, have access to a pool of qualified professionals capable of delivering high-quality work on essential projects.

Hayley McKinstry, Director of Partnerships & Apprenticeships at Truro and Penwith College, commented:

“At Truro & Penwith College, we are proud to collaborate with Cormac to deliver an apprenticeship that meets both their business needs and Cornwall’s broader skills agenda. This partnership highlights our commitment to working closely with local employers to ensure the county’s workforce has access to the qualifications and training that are essential to its industries. By offering this tailored Civil Engineering Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship, we are supporting local companies like Cormac by ensuring they can access the skilled talent they need right here in Cornwall.”

Tom Lal, Business Partnership Coordinator at Truro and Penwith College, added:

“Civil engineering is crucial to shaping Cornwall’s future, from sustainable transport and flood defences to preserving historic structures and supporting housing developments. The Level 3 Civil Engineering Technician Apprenticeship offers an ideal entry into this dynamic field, blending hands-on experience with academic learning to equip individuals with the skills needed for a successful career. Designed specifically for Cornwall’s needs, this programme ensures that apprentices are well-prepared to contribute to the region’s growth and infrastructure development.”

The partnership between Truro and Penwith College and Cormac marks the beginning of a programme that has been tailored to meet industry requirements. Through this pilot initiative, the College and Cormac aim to perfect the delivery of the apprenticeship before opening it up to other companies, ensuring it remains responsive to local needs and adaptable to a rapidly changing industry.

Managing Director for Cormac, Dominic Bostock, remarked,

“We are excited to partner with Truro and Penwith College to bring this apprenticeship programme to life. It is essential that we equip the next generation of civil engineers with the skills, knowledge, and experience necessary to address the challenges of the future and continue providing value to our communities. Our collaboration on this program demonstrates our commitment to career development and ongoing efforts to invest in local talent to drive innovation in civil engineering within the region. We look forward to welcoming our new colleagues in September this year.”

The Level 3 Civil Engineering Technician Apprenticeship is designed for individuals looking to embark on or progress within careers in civil engineering, construction, and infrastructure management. It offers a clear career path for school leavers, career changers, and those already working in the industry who seek formal qualifications and professional development.
