Futures were in focus this week as Cornish students collected University-level results while celebrating the doors they have opened, including mentorship from a leading London law firm and access to Masters-level study.

Nearly 80% of students graduating from BA (Hons) and BSc (Hons) degrees at the University Centre Truro and Penwith have achieved top grades of 2:1 or First-Class Honours in a year of success for the Centre.

Foundation Degree (FdA and FdSc) students also enjoyed top results with 60% achieving Merit and Distinction grades.

Zack, Samuel and Joel celebrated their results.

Students celebrated unlocking their future aspirations during Results Day at the TEF Silver rated University Centre Truro & Penwith, with the top grades marking a moment of immense pride for both students and staff.

Scarlet Ring, FdSc Law with Business student from St Buryan, found a Merit award in her envelope having already secured mentorship from Baker McKenzie, a leading London Law firm. Scarlet’s introduction to Baker McKenzie was thanks to careers support from the University Centre which saw her gain an invitation to the highly competitive ‘Inspire Law’ networking event in London. The University Centre also connected Scarlet with the Healthworks Cornwall project, where she gained financial assistance for travel and accommodation, enabling her to embrace the opportunity.

With her career opportunities snowballing Scarlet recently joined a student panel to discuss graduate recruitment on a global webinar hosted by GTI Breakfast News. Shortly before collecting her results Scarlet also completed a Commercial Law Internship with Internship Experience UK, where she was selected in the top 50 of 2,500 applicants.

Scarlet commented: “They told me it [Inspire Law] was competitive, but I didn’t realise what that really meant until I was there and people were talking about how surprised they were to have been able to attend.

“I realised that I needed to do an application form [to gain an invitation] but I have never done one before so knew I would need help with it, so I booked an appointment with Louise and had several careers sessions. I definitely wouldn’t have been able to do it without Louise, she was amazing.”

Not satisfied with her own success, Scarlet has taken up a mentoring role at Humphry Davy School in Penzance where she hopes to share her experiences and empower young people to pursue their dreams.

Penzance based student Bibba Willis, picked up first-class honours in her BA (Hons) Human Behavioural Studies degree at the University Centre’s Penzance campus at Penwith College.

Bibba completed the first two years of her degree twenty years ago, but left university due to challenges with ADHD.

Bibba was delighted to learn that her previous two years of study would be accepted by the University Centre Truro & Penwith, allowing her to go straight into the third-year top-up course and she now plans to complete a Masters in her field, Bibba commented:

“I’m so pleased that I did [my degree] here, because it’s a small cohort but also it’s a community and you really get to know the lecturers

“I only succeeded in the way that I did because of the support that I got at Penwith College, which is different from the bigger universities.”
