Cornwall’s only Expert Apprenticeship Provider has announced the return of the county’s only entry level AAT finance apprenticeship which has previously supported learners to achieve top financial careers and supported Cornwall’s employers with problematic skills gaps.

Truro and Penwith College has reintroduced Cornwall’s only ‘Level 2 Accounts or Finance Assistant’ apprenticeship, that allows employers to train current members of staff with no previous experience or recruit new entry level employees.

The College’s apprenticeship has a significant track record of supporting employers to develop valued skills while successfully building quality careers. Many previous learners have progressed to senior and managerial roles, including Kate Bunt, who started her Level 2 apprenticeship in 2015, progressing up to Level 4 with the College and has already achieved the role of Finance Director at Cornwall Glass.

Kate commented: “I appreciate each step of my career so far, which began with the Level 2 apprenticeship at Truro and Penwith College. The hands-on experience was invaluable as it allowed me to develop practical skills and gain insights into the financial sector.”

The apprenticeship includes the highly regarded AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting, that learners achieve alongside their apprenticeship studies while working full time at a local accountancy practice or within a professional finance department.

The College is expecting the announcement to result in a number of entry-level apprenticeship opportunities becoming available and is encouraging interested learners to apply for its apprenticeship online now, with applications open to anyone over 16, with no upper age limit.

Employers interested in offering the apprenticeship are encouraged to contact apprenticeships@truro-penwith.ac.uk to book an appointment with a Business Partnership Consultant, to discuss the options available and any relevant funding support.

The Level 2 Finance or Accounts Apprenticeship is designed to equip learners with essential skills and knowledge. As an Accounts or Finance Assistant, apprentices will become integral members of finance teams, contributing to the efficiency and accuracy of business finance functions. Responsibilities will vary based on team structure and business size but will typically include tasks such as basic bookkeeping, managing sales and purchase ledgers, running calculations for accurate records and payments, and data entry.

The apprenticeship is designed to open doors to a wide range of sectors, allowing learners to work in corporate businesses, sole trader operations, partnerships, public sector organisations, not-for-profits and educational institutions. Whether working in-house or for an accountancy firm, bookkeeping practice, or as a self-employed accountant, the skills gained through this program are considered versatile and highly sought after.

Charli Styles, Programme Team Leader for Future Skills at Truro and Penwith College, commented: “We are thrilled to reintroduce the Level 2 Accounts or Finance Assistant apprenticeship programme to our extensive range of apprenticeship offerings. It’s a fantastic opportunity for individuals looking to start or progress their careers in Finance.

“This program not only aligns with Cornwall’s strategic goals but also empowers individuals to build rewarding careers in Finance and Accountancy. Our partnerships with top employers ensure that our apprentices are well-prepared to meet the demands of the modern workplace.”

The apprenticeship combines on-the-job training with academic learning, allowing apprentices to earn while they learn. Participants will receive support from experienced tutors and industry professionals, ensuring they gain the necessary skills to thrive in their roles and advance their careers.

Charli Styles continued: “Apprenticeships are integral to Cornwall’s Economic Strategy, aimed at fostering a skilled workforce and ensuring sustainable, high-quality employment and career opportunities. Through collaboration with our top employer partners, Truro and Penwith College ensures that its apprenticeship programs are constantly evolving to meet the dynamic needs of the workplace, offering unparalleled opportunities for both current employees and new recruits”.
