Silvermithing student Emma Foster has scooped a prestigious European Art Award, after winning runner-up in Pewter Live 2023.
Pewter live is a design competition that takes place annually at Pewterers’ Hall, in the heart of London and this year marked the 35th year of the competition. Each year has a theme and for 2023, the theme was Energy. Emma used the energy of falling water to produce water droplet vases and commented: “My original design changed after a lot of trial and error with a lot of test pieces until I reached a product I was happy with.”
Wowing the judges with her water droplet vases displaying exceptional skill, creative vision and innovative use of pewter, Emma firmly showcased herself as a rising star in the field of Silversmithing.
A delighted Emma explained: “To find out I was the runner up was quite a surprise because I didn’t expect a result anything like this after seeing the amazing work produced by the other competitors.”
Emma began her silvermithing journey in 2021 when she started the FdA Silversmithing and Jewellery course at the Unviversity Centre and in fact, if it were not for her lecturers and cohort she would not have even entered the Pewter Live competition. Thanks to their encouragement Emma stepped out of her comfort zone took the leap, scooping the prize.
