Core Maths is a one-year course so you will have a grade to put on any applications you make in the second year.

Solve real-life problems with a sharp focus on problem solving. 


Core Maths builds upon and strengthens existing skills developed during the GCSE Maths course. There is a sharp focus on problem-solving and using and applying mathematics to solve problems relevant to students’ everyday lives. This includes financial applications of mathematics such as tax, national insurance and mortgages. Fermi estimations is another popular module.


A qualification in Core Maths is valued by many universities and employers. Core Maths will be desirable if you are thinking of going on to study courses in subjects such as computing, economics, engineering, finance, geography, psychology or any of the sciences at degree level.

Assessment Arrangements

Core Maths is assessed over 2 exams, each consisting of 60 marks. There is no coursework element.
