Determined to become a successful business entrepreneur, Maxine Tregenza took her education into her own hands when she decided to complete five business-themed Success courses over four years with Truro and Penwith College. Courses in Employment Law and Employee Relations, HR Quality and Performance, Business Management Economic Sustainability for Business and Project Management gave Maxine the step up that she needed to be able to apply for a full business degree at the TEF Gold-rated College.
Previously working full-time as an Administration Co-ordinator, Maxine decided to progress her career in the direction of business alongside her working life: “I was working in a job that I could do well in but I knew that I could do more and just wanted to push myself."
The Business Management Success course was my first taste of writing a business plan which meant that I was ready when I started my business degree.
Studying Success courses for just one day every other week, Maxine was able to fit her work and home life around her study pattern, meaning that she made the most of her time: “The courses fit really well when working full time and I was even able to apply what I learnt straight into my role at work. I changed the stationery process at my workplace which saved and increased efficiency.”
She found that studying several University level short courses beforehand really prepared her for what was expected on her FdA Business and BA (Hons) Business, Enterprise and Leadership courses at the College.
She said: “Success course work is structured like a degree with assignments which really helped me to create a solid foundation to step into a degree afterwards. It’s something that I’ve always wanted to do but never got the chance as I went straight into work. The skills that I have learnt from my Success courses have helped me answer questions and have given me extra insight at how to tackle my university projects.”
Now Managing Director of the student-led business, Cornish Essence, Maxine aims to utilise her skills to help the company thrive as they produce, market and retail unique air fresheners inspired by Cornwall’s unique character, heritage and landscape.
If I’m doing something, then I have to put my all into it. I have a lot of pride in what I do and am extremely happy with the direction that the business is going in, particularly now we have local retailers keen to supply our products.
Grateful for the help and support received from Truro and Penwith College, Maxine plans to complete her degree before continuing with her own business: “I’m so glad that I took this route; I developed so much expertise and confidence in my work which means that I’m more confident studying now too. If you’re working full time and you want to progress academically, I would definitely recommend taking some Success courses; they helped me to progress my career and start my own business.”
