Founding director of two success business, Viki Carpenter is pleased to have been supported by Truro and Penwith College from her university education to business support and beyond.
The College is very much a part of the story for me.
Initially studying the FdA Photography and Digital Imaging, two-year Foundation Degree, before completing her university studies with the BA (Hons) Applied Media top-up year also offered at the College, Viki was well prepared to enter the media industry upon graduating: "The tutor gives you really good commercial photography skills that you can use within the real world."
Working for a variety of jobs as a journalist and image editor, previous employers include Cosmopolitan, The Mail online, Cornwall Today, various other fashion magazines and herself as a freelance marketer. With the goal of setting up her own business, Viki joined the business start-up Spark project at the College and subsequently co-founded a marketing company called Gloss Media.
Owed to the support and opportunities provided by the programme, Viki then stumbled upon her second business venture where she founded Dog Friendly Cornwall. With a lot of life experience under her belt, she now manages to uphold two successful businesses at the same time.
The knowledge learnt from my degree and my experience within the industry has informed the way that I've set up and run my own businesses today.
Always keen to learn more, Viki decided to attend a free Higher Level Skills taster session in Leadership and Management to support her role as Founding Director within the businesses: "The Gloss Media business has grown quite quickly and now we're looking to take on new staff. I've previously worked a lot as a middle manager but it's time to step up as a leader and a manager within my own business. Leaders find solutions and make things work."
