BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Sport & Exercise Science

Do you enjoy developing your knowledge of both theoretical and practical sport? Then this course will suit you in undertaking a sport science or health related career path, such as sports rehabilitation, sports nutrition, or sports psychology, amongst others.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

During this course, you will develop a range of skills and abilities that will enable you to either progress onto Higher Education or into employment in sports related industries. You will discover how to apply and develop theoretical and practical techniques to analyse and improve sporting performance of yourself and others as well as improving your general health and fitness. You will learn the appropriate use of both laboratory and field-based testing and training equipment using our highly equipped sports science laboratory. You will also learn how to use digital analysis systems to compare yourself and others with elite performers to fine tune sports skills and techniques, developing a strong scientific and academic approach.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

With a strong academic focus this course will suit you if you have an interest in using scientific approaches to developing groups and individuals across a wide range of populations, from those suffering with severe lifestyle diseases right through to those at the top of the sports performance pyramid. Grading throughout the programme is by a wide range of assessment methods including formal exams (internal and external), assessments, presentations, essays and time constrained assignments.

Alongside the Sport and Exercise Science Diploma you will also have the option of continuing to enjoy and work on your own specialist sport through one of our nationally successful sports academies.

WHERE WILL IT TAKE ME?

This course will allow progression directly to a Sports Science or other sports related Higher Educational pathway, including at the University Centre Truro and Penwith. Career paths available will include a role in sports, therapy, rehabilitation, nutrition, or performance analysis, along with most other sports related areas.

Assessment Arrangements

Throughout the course you will be required to complete at least 15 hours of independent study time per week. To support you in this you will have access to lecturers via email and will be able to access support materials and resources via our virtual learning environment – Moodle.

As a vocational sports course, you will be expected to wear appropriate sports kit, which can be purchased from the college at an additional cost. Purchase is not compulsory, but we would expect one item of Truro College kit to be available to wear when representing the college at external events. There is also a refundable charge for library resources and locker key.

You will initially be registered for the Foundation Diploma in Sport & Exercise Science. On successful completion of year 1 students may then continue to complete the full Extended Diploma qualification. Achievement in this course relies heavily on attendance, punctuality, and commitment to learning, both independently and within lectures. You will learn in a friendly atmosphere, using a variety of assessment methods including:

Entry Requirements

You will attend an interview with a member of the course team, where your enthusiasm for sports related goals, attitude and future career path will be considered, you will need to have gained four level two qualifications including Maths or English (literature included) at Grade 4 or higher.

Information & Support

Along with your own module lecturers, personal tutor (within the teaching team) there is also additional support from the college Student Services area, the Student Support team can see you on a one-to-one basis and offer advice and guidance on financial, personal, and emotional issues. A professional team of staff work together with your personal tutor to support you towards a successfully completion of your course and the recognised pathways to progression after leaving college.
