What will I learn?

The course aims to give you a varied learning experience and will be a combination of a student centered approach to learning, involving research for assignments, guest speakers, lectures, group work and discussions and, where possible, visits. This will be supplemented by classroom lectures where the tutors will develop theoretical knowledge and the examination techniques required in order to ensure success in external assessments.

An experienced team of lecturers, many of whom have relevant industry experience, will support your learning.  You will need to be prepared to work hard independently, carry out in-depth research and sue a variety of sources of information to supplement your understanding.

Where will it take me?

Business is such a diverse subject that there are a wide number of progression routes available, ranging from studying the subject further in Higher Education, securing an Apprenticeship, or even starting your own business. Career options are varied and have included students progressing on to become stock market analysts, events managers, investment consultants and human resource specialists.

Many have successfully transitioned into the global market place working in Dubai, Australia and so on for global businesses.

Those with a more entrepreneurial mindset have set up a range of businesses including branding and digital marketing consultancies as well as recruitment agencies.

Higher Education studies across a diverse of range of courses are also an option with students successfully studying subjects such as Construction Management, Property Management, Criminology and Law to the more traditional areas such as Business Management, Fashion Marketing, Economics, Accounting and Finance and Entrepreneurship.

Assessment arrangements

Your achievement in this subject is dependent upon excellent attendance, punctuality and effort.  You will learn in a friendly atmosphere, using a variety of assessment methods.

Assessment is a combination of internal and external assessments; the internal assessments are moderated by OCR and will be graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction.  These will be awarded a number of points which will be added to the external assessments to calculate your final grade.

The external assessments are graded at Near Pass, Pass, Merit or Distinction.  There are three external assessments in each year.

There is a strong emphasis on the acquisition of skills which will prepare you for study at university or for entry directly into the business world.

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs at Grade 4 to include either English Language or Literature and/or Maths. A Level 2 Certificate at a Merit Grade or above in an appropriate subject can also be considered (plus English and/or Maths at Grade 4 or above).

Information & Support

We encourage all students to read widely and conduct their own research into the topics they are studying. There are a wide range of materials available across the campus to support this ranging from newspapers, textbooks and the Moodle site. In order to prepare for each of the external assessments learners will be expected to revise from home and complete any homework activities set.

There will be regular 1:1 meetings with your tutor to review your progress and, where appropriate, you will be given the opportunity to attend drop-in sessions, tailored 1:1 support, as well as a variety of opportunities to stretch and challenge the ablest students. We encourage you to proactively engage with the support available in order to reach your full potential.
