Truro and Penwith College is here to help with funding available* that will cover or contribute to the cost of a wide-range of training programmes that have been designed to fit around family life and will support you to change career or to boost your skills and enhance employability, whether in the industry you’re experienced in or in a completely new profession.
Our courses start from non-qualification, introductory training all the way up to advanced professional qualifications in leadership and management. Several include modules that focus on starting your own business.
Qualifications courses cover a range of subjects from administration, accounting, human resources and marketing, to management, law, teaching and coaching, nursing, customer service, hair and beauty and many more.
Our blend of outstanding, industry expert tutors, and purpose-built facilities will help you to land on your feet.
Courses vary in length, from day classes and summer schools to year-long Diplomas and are provided in a range of locations across Cornwall. If social distancing is a concern a selection of our professional courses are now also taught remotely, so there’s something to suit everyone.
Your circumstances may mean the College can help you to access funding that covers or contributes to the cost of qualifications that will help you to get back into work, or progress your career.
The tuition fee for some courses is waived if you fall into any of the categories below:
- Unemployed JSA/ESA (Work Activity Group)
- Unemployed or on other state benefits
- Need ‘Adult Basic Skills’ in English and Maths
- Are 19-23 without a full Level 2 or 3 qualification
- Are under 19 years old at 31 August 2020
- Are over 19 with annual earnings of less than £17,004
Adult learners aged 19 or over who don’t fall into any of the above categories may be eligible for the 19+ Advanced Learner Loan, which you only pay back when you are earning over £26,575. The loan is not means tested and there are no fees to pay upfront.
Cornwall’s aspiring leaders and managers can also now receive up to 80% funded training towards our suite of ILM Leadership, Management and Coaching courses. Key workers are entitled to the top-level funding with 80% available for health and care workers from the public sector or an SME care provider and 50% for those working for large employers and SMEs regardless of sector. Our Apprenticeship programmes will get you started on your chosen career path and are a great way to earn while you learn.
With an Apprenticeship, you’ll have all the benefits of a college course, including resources and support to help you succeed, as well as all the benefits of employment: a wage and a working role. This makes it a great option for those looking to move into a new professional career or progress to the next level.
Working closely with hundreds of companies across Cornwall, the College runs Apprenticeship programmes in over 40 different subjects covering a range of industries, such as; construction, hair and beauty, marketing, engineering, accounting, hospitality and more. Whether you're a beginner, intermediate or expert, our courses range from entry to degree level meaning there's something to suit you whatever your ability.
Traineeships are work placements that can last from six weeks up to one year and help 16 to 24-year olds, or 25-year olds with an education, health and care (EHC) plan, to prepare for an Apprenticeship or to start their career.
Our NEW Hospitality Traineeship Programme (Link) is perfect for those looking to get a head start in the hospitality industry. Trainees will attend College throughout the programme to develop their skills while completing nearly 100-hours of quality work experience with Cornwall’s top hospitality employers, where they will get a taste of a range of hospitality areas including kitchen, front of house, housekeeping, marketing and accountancy.
If your recent home-schooling efforts have left you wanting more, or a classroom seems like your ideal office, the College is home to the Cornwall Teaching School and offers a variety of teaching qualifications that will set you up from scratch for a career in the education sector.
Our PGCE course provides teachers, trainers and tutors with the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and professional values necessary for a teaching career within the Further Education (post-16) and Skills sector, including further education colleges, adult and community education, work-based training providers, offender learning and public sector organisations.
We also offer a Cornwall School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) qualification which is in partnership with 16 local secondary schools, one special school and Truro and Penwith College, which offers Postgraduate teacher training at secondary school level.

Courses are available in a variety of subject areas including Science, Business, Medicine, Nursing and Human Sciences, Sports Science, Health and Social Care, Art and Design, Computing and IT and more.
In previous years students have gained places to train as Nurses, Teachers, Occupational therapists and in other caring professions, while others have chosen to follow degrees in a diverse range of subjects, including Anthropology and Forensic Science.
Our higher education courses are designed with employers allowing students to progress into their chosen industry on completion, apply for Masters Degrees, PhDs or postgraduate Initial Teacher Training courses.
