Career: Job Coach Tutor

My Story:

After originally completing a Social Administration and Policy degree, Jenny started her career within the Education sector aged 22 .  Over the years she had varied roles in administration and student support. Whilst supporting a student at Truro College, Jenny attended a talk about the PGCE and decided too return to the classroom herself to complete her PGCE at the University Centre and get in to teaching.

Jenny said: “I ended up by accident in the education sector, but once I started I really enjoyed it. I never thought I would be a teacher!”

“It was an incredibly well taught course, and it’s the course that has taught me the most in terms of personal development and it was the most challenging course that I have ever done.”

“The PGCE gave me the confidence to know what to do with the planning lessons and things like that in my current role.”

“I wouldn’t have done it if it hadn’t been local. I had children at school and I just wouldn’t have been able to do it, so being based at Truro gave me the opportunity to do it.”

“The team found me the perfect placement during my course, it was down at Haven House in the business admin apprenticeship programme. It fitted really well with my previous experience and background knowledge I had from administrating.”

“In my current role, my biggest achievement was to get all my students to do a Zoom and I got them engaged in that as it was something they had never done. I have also managed to secure a work placement for one of them. Looking at my learners now and seeing the difference and progress which is rewarding to see.”

“I have found my place, it’s a great team, small groups of students and it’s not traditional teaching, its work skills based. I love it.”
