Josh – BSc (Hons) Applied Sport and Health Science

Not wanting to moving away after finishing college, studying at the University Centre has enabled Josh to continue with his sporting commitments locally whilst gaining his degree.

"I like living here, have family here and I play a lot of sport in Cornwall too, so I wasn’t looking to move away."

My Story:

Whilst studying his BTEC Sports Science course at Truro College, Josh was given information about the progression routes available to him which would enable him to gain a degree without having to leave Cornwall. Josh has now completed his degree whilst continuing to play for the sports teams locally and is set to graduate later this year.

Josh said: “The course seemed like the natural progression for me and fitted my lifestyle in Cornwall. I like living here, have family here and I play a lot of sport in Cornwall too, so I wasn’t looking to move away.”

“With the small classes, you receive pretty much 1:1 support from the tutors, which is really beneficial to your learning.”

“Our tutors were there for help and support and we had careers sessions too with the Uni Careers advisor Louise. We knew that we had support with our next steps even after we graduate which is really helpful.”

“The course was compressed into two days per week gave me time to work part time and still have time to do Uni work and fit in my sport commitments and family life which was important to me.”

“My highlight has been the achievement of getting my results and gaining the qualification.  When I started it seemed a long way off, but it’s come around really quickly.”

“My advice to students starting their degrees would be to enjoy it as much as you can, it goes very fast. Remember to work hard in the first two years too as that will really help with the final year.”
