My Story

Louis, previously from Penryn College, found the IB Diploma to be more than an academic qualification – it’s changed his mindset on what’s possible for his future.

Choosing the IB at Truro College pushed Louis to challenge his limits and grow in confidence. Surrounded by supportive lecturers and inspiring classmates, Louis surprised himself by achieving 31 points and is now applying to study Medicine – a goal he once thought was out of reach for him.

“I always thought the IB was for the really academic students – the straight A* people,” Louis admits. “I didn’t feel like I was that kind of person. But I chose the IB because I wanted to push myself, keep my options open, and be around people I could learn from.”

Louis studied Biology, Music, and Geography at higher level, with Maths, English, and Spanish at standard level.

Through the support of the lecturing staff at Truro College, Louis flourished and surprised himself with what he’s achieved: scoring 31 points overall, with solid results across all subjects.

“My lecturers and my tutors gave me a lot of hope and confidence. I want to go into medicine and be a doctor. I didn’t even think that was possible for me a year ago or two years ago. I didn’t even think I was even going to go to uni. But now I realise what I’m capable of going on to doing.”

As well as learning from his peers, Louis has also formed lasting friendships, thanks to the close-knit IB community: “I’ve made loads of friends. The IB community is really good. Everyone just gets along. It’s brilliant.”

Louis’ story breaks the myth that the IB is only for top-grade students: “You don’t have to be an A* student to do the IB. You just need to be willing to challenge yourself. It’s okay to feel out of your depth — that’s how you grow.”

Louis plans to apply for university in September and is currently reviewing his choices: “A year ago, I’d never have thought I could apply for medicine. Now, I’m applying to study at Bristol or Reading.”

For anyone considering the IB, Louis has simple advice: “Just do it anyway. I feel like you never know what you can reach without testing your limits.”
