"Studying for my BA has been such a fun and rewarding experience. I have been able to continue my life at home in Cornwall without needing to travel too far or live away, and still do the school run, it's perfect!".

Course: BA (Hons) Applied Media
Career: Marketing Assistant
My Story:
Vanessa knew of the University Centre Truro and Penwith as her eldest son previously enjoyed his International Baccalaureate studies at the Truro campus. She initially enquired about a part-time course in Photography and joined a taster day session. She saw the great facilities in the Fal building, met inspiring tutors which all convinced her to take the huge leap of enrolling on the FdA Film, Media, Photography/BA (Hons) Applied Media course. She realised as a mature student here she would be able study local and continue life without having to be based away from home.
“I loved learning new skills, developing knowledge in all the creative aspects of the course as well as looking into the history of media and contextual studies which gave so much insight into this ever-evolving field. There were opportunities to use and borrow a variety of equipment, use the studio, dark room, explore filmmaking, and create content for professional practice. I received informative advice and support from the careers advisor which helped me direct my job search too.”
“Joining the great University Centre Student Ambassador programme enabled me to meet students on other courses, and I enjoyed earning to supplement my income whilst helping at a variety of events like College Open Days, Royal Cornwall Show, Boardmasters, and Cornwall Space Camp.”
“I really enjoyed creating course work for exhibitions particularly the Hall for Cornwall Four Ways event which allowed me to combine creativity with my volunteer work with grey seals promoting the marine conservation message. The support I’ve had from my lecturers has been amazing! The department has a very friendly atmosphere. To achieve a First with Principal’s Commendation award is such a fantastic feeling!”
Since graduating Vanessa has found work in roles which allow her to take both her interests forward. She is enjoying working as a Marketing Assistant in a vibrant department at the University Centre Truro and Penwith. She also has an additional role allowing her to be closely involved with seals and conservation with Cornish Seal Sanctuary and British Divers Marine Life Rescue.
Vanessa said, “I definitely recommend University Centre as an excellent place to study and would encourage potential students to be brave, explore courses on offer, and take up the challenge as you will receive great support achieving your results.”
