Ned’s Story

A Level student Ned has been able to reach further with his passion for rowing thanks to the College’s Elite Academy.

“The Elite Academy gives us time to train in college. We’re supported and helped and have access to the College facilities and equipment.”

My Story

Ned studies A Levels in Biology, Classical Civilisation and Politics at Truro College, and is in his first year.

“Classical Civilisation is shaping up to be really enjoyable; I’m finding it really interesting,” Ned explained.

“I’ve found it’s really useful to be so close to Truro town, and the easy access you get to other things around here. Also, the study centres inside the College are helpful for catching up and getting ahead with the work. You have access to all the books and computers.”

Outside of his studies, Ned is also a member of the College’s Elite Academy. The Elite Academy is for athletic students who don’t have dedicated academy for their sport – these include students such as rowers, runners, boxers, and powerlifters.

“We all have individual plans set by our individual coaches, and the Elite Academy gives us time to train in college.” Ned explained.

“We’re supported and helped and have access to the College facilities and equipment.”

Ned is a keen rower and rows for Greenbank Rowing Club in Falmouth, training on Stithians Lake. He has impressively won a regional title during his first season of racing.

“I try and train as much as I can.

“I’m currently Under 18 Single Sculler Champion in the Southwest, and this has been my first season of racing, and I’ve really enjoyed it”.

Ned’s advice for future students is: “Don’t be afraid to ask questions, get involved in everything you can, and make the most of it because you’re being offered a lot of stuff that you’re not going to have access to again.”

Ned hopes to progress to university, although he has cast his net wide for his search. “I’d love to try and get a rowing scholarship, especially abroad; America offers some good ones and there’s also some in Europe, particularly the Netherlands and the UK that seem good. So that’s my plan, to just keep at it and see where it takes me.”
