BTEC Level 2 First Award in Public Services

This Level 2 qualification has been developed to ensure learners develop the skills and behaviours that will give them the best opportunity to be successful when applying for work in public services. Learners will develop both transferable and practical skills.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

This course is aimed at learners who have chosen to focus their learning and career development within the public services sector, and who are looking for an engaging and stimulating qualification which will prepare them for successful performance in working life and progression into employment by developing a range of essential skills, techniques, and attitudes. It is designed for post-16 learners who wish to have a full-time focus on public services. It is an ideal qualification if they are intending to progress directly to employment in the public services sector, or progress to a Level 3 qualification. They will learn through a range of methods including practical experiences and theory-based lessons. There will be classroom lectures, presentations from Public Service teams, practical sessions and group discussions.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

The qualification contains both mandatory and optional units which relate directly to the skills, knowledge and behaviours expected by employers in the sector.

The areas covered include:
• Employment in the Uniformed Public Services
• Health and Fitness for Entry to the Uniformed Public Services
• Expedition and Land Navigation Skills
• Impact of Law on Public Services
• Crime & its Effects on Society
• Community and Cultural Awareness
• Attending Emergency Incidents in the Public Services
• Security Procedures in the Public Services
• Cyber Security & Crime.

WHERE WILL IT TAKE ME?

In completing this qualification, you will be able to progress onto further study, training, or employment. You will also have developed academic and practical skills that may be applicable in other work situations or will enable you to progress to Level 3 qualifications in areas such as Public Services or Sport.

Assessment Arrangements

You will be assessed through assignments which will be either written or practical; there are no external exams, a variety of assessment methods will be used including:

  1. Practical and leadership assessments
  2. Written assignments
  3. Presentations
  4. Discussions

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

To gain entry to the course, you will need three GCSEs at grade 3 or 4 including English Language or Literature and/or mathematics.

INFORMATION & SUPPORT

Throughout the course, you would be required to complete at least 10 hours of independent study time per week. To support you in this you will have access to lecturers via email and will be able to access support materials and resources via our virtual learning environment, Moodle.

Alongside the Level 2 qualification, you will work towards OCN Work Skills qualifications. These are designed to provide you with the range of employability skills that are key to preparing you for the workplace.
