College departments join forces to give student work experience

In the pursuit of his career goal, a Personal Professional Development (PPD) student from Truro College has begun a work placement within the College’s award-winning Health, Wellbeing and Sport (HWS) programme.

Olek Bradbury’s placement came around when he mentioned to his lecturer that he was considering becoming a coach, saying: “They told me I could do a placement with the HWS programme to see how I do and if I like it. I’m hoping it will give me a wider idea of what I want to do in the future.”

Olek’s time in the programme will be spent gaining valuable qualifications such as the Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification and helping the programme’s attendees in their health and fitness goals.

This latter aspect will be of particular use to Olek as the HWS programme is utilised by a range of people, from the sporting elite to activity novices, giving Olek a wide range of experience that will help him in his future in the health and fitness industry.

Of his time so far on the PPD course and with the HWS team, Olek said: “I’m enjoying PPD, it’s exciting and most of the lessons are really fun. We cover things like money management and psychology. With Robin mentoring us on how to find what we want to do in the future, it’s a lot of fun. It’s a great thing that the HWS is doing, helping people to get fitter and keeping everyone healthy.”

HWS coordinator Julian Wills is thrilled to be welcoming Olek to the team, saying: “We’re delighted to have Olek on the programme. He’s going to offer us something really different and we’ve had a lot of success with students going on to secure employment after placements on the HWS programme. We’re sure that Olek will go on to secure a great career in the leisure industry after this. It’s brilliant to have him here. He’s really enthusiastic and it’s nice to work across the College with the PPD team.”
