My Story
Abi’s journey into the beauty industry began after leaving Pool Academy, when she chose to study at Truro and Penwith College. For Abi, the decision on where to study was clear: “Truro College stood out to me, amongst the other closer colleges. I found Truro College had more to offer with the courses I wanted, the facilities were great, and staff were brilliant giving me support through the enrolment process.”
Abi started with Level 2 Beauty Therapy and went on to complete Level 3. These courses helped her uncover a true passion for treatments such as massage and facials.
Abi reflects fondly on her time at college: “Meeting new people and experiencing different levels of my course” was a highlight, and she particularly enjoyed the hands-on nature of her studies. “I enjoyed the practical side of Beauty, and I really enjoyed working with and chatting with clients, building my confident structure.”
After completing her studies in 2018, Abi continued to develop her skills through apprenticeships. “After leaving College full time, I completed a few apprenticeships which I loved as it got me to experience life as a beauty therapist.” Alongside this, she gained valuable experience working at the Carbis Bay Hotel before moving into roles at spas across Cornwall. She then spent three years working in a salon in Hayle, further developing her expertise before making the leap into business ownership.
Abi had always dreamed of running her own salon, inspired by her family’s involvement in the beauty industry. With determination and hard work, she turned that dream into reality: “My goal was to always own my own salon… I have been in the beauty industry since I was 16, and my passion increased further as I had family members in the same industry as me. After a few years of completing specific courses, with extreme motivation & hard work, I have achieved my goal, and I am now an owner of a Beauty Salon in Cornwall. It would be a dream to open another salon in the future.”
Abi has recently collected two awards for her salon, Adore Beauty, one for ‘Best Beauty Salon’ at the 2025 South West Prestige Awards and one for ‘Best Beauty Salon’ at the 2025 Cornwall Hair & Beauty Awards.
Reflecting on her journey, Abi recognises how important her time at Truro and Penwith College was. “Truro College prepares you for the future by providing supportive teaching, I gained a huge amount of confidence. Fulfilling what I wanted to learn with hands on experience, and a network of support from peers and staff throughout my learning.” She also values the confidence she built working with clients daily, something she continues to carry into her career.
For students following in her footsteps, Abi’s advice is clear: “While you are still at college, complete as many courses as you can, as when you leave it is harder. With motivation, courage, determination and passion you can achieve anything in life. Believe in yourself and you will go far.”
