Course: Skills Bootcamp for Future Leaders
My Story:
Adrian, a team leader at Premier Foods in Lifton, recently stepped into his leadership role when he was offered the opportunity to take part in the Skills Bootcamp for Future Leaders.
Responsible for 17 crew members and overseeing the sweet operation of custard and rice pudding, Adrian saw the Bootcamp as a chance to strengthen his leadership skills and grow in confidence.
“I did the Skills Bootcamp to help develop my own career and gain the skills needed to achieve this,” he said.
Adrian was approached by his employer’s training department, who were collaborating with Truro College to offer this upskilling opportunity.
The initial information and guidance session gave Adrian a taste of what was to come and showed how the course ingredients aligned perfectly with his day-to-day responsibilities.
Returning to an educational setting after many years away, his last college-based experience being in 1997, Adrian was unsure what to expect. Reflecting on his experience he commented:
“It was a culture shock at first, but it was managed well and delivered at a great pace, which made it much more relaxing.”
Adrian found the smaller class sizes and diversity within the group to be a strength. Despite a broad age range among participants, everyone was welcomed and supported in a way that created a strong sense of community.
“It was a good mix of people, and everyone was made to feel welcome and catered for,” Adrian remarked.
Premier Foods supported Adrian throughout his training, providing time to attend college sessions and flexibility around assignments.
The fortnightly schedule of in-person days fitted well with Adrian’s work and personal life, allowing him to fully digest the course content.
What really hit the sweet spot for Adrian was how practical and directly applicable the course was. He’s already served up new ideas and practices within his team and they’ve gone down a treat.
“I’ve implemented many practices from the course, it’s really helped guide me in my leadership role,” he shared.
Though still new to leadership when he began the course, Adrian credits the Bootcamp with giving him the tools and confidence to embrace the responsibilities of his role more fully.
The experience has also opened his eyes to future possibilities and further career progression. Looking back, Adrian sees the course as an important and transformative experience.
“It’s been a great way to build confidence and gain valuable skills that I can use every day.” he reflected.
When asked what advice he would give to someone considering enrolling, Adrian’s message is simple:
“Just go for it! It’s well-paced, supportive, and truly relevant to real-world leadership.”
Adrian’s time on the Skills Bootcamp for Future Leaders has equipped him not just with leadership strategies, but with a renewed sense of purpose and direction in his career.
