Job Title: CEO
Employer: Pentreath Ltd
Course: Professional Masterclass: Boosting Performance
Emma, Deputy CEO of Pentreath, recently took part in a Winter Workshop alongside her team of managers. Encouraged by her HR Manager, Emma joined the Boosting Performance workshop to support her colleagues and to see if she could pick up any practical tips for improving performance management at Pentreath. She was particularly on the lookout for those “golden nuggets” of wisdom that could help her in her leadership role.
Stepping back into a learning environment turned out to be a really positive experience. Emma described it as “supportive, enjoyable, and comfortable—perfect for discussing how to boost performance across organisations.”
She especially appreciated the chance to meet and exchange ideas with other professionals from Cornwall’s business community. “It was reassuring to know that many of the practices at Pentreath are already on track with industry recommendations,” she said, adding, “hearing others’ experiences gave me some new perspectives to consider.”
A key takeaway for Emma was learning about the “golden thread” and how it ties organisational and individual goals together to drive success. She found this approach enlightening and quickly recognised its potential to fine-tune Pentreath’s internal processes.
She is now working on developing an operational plan for the organisation, along with project-specific plans that will form part of the induction process for new staff. These plans will ensure that, from day one, every team member is clear on the company’s goals and understands how their role contributes to achieving them.
Emma was also impressed with the workshop trainer’s approach. “Paula [the tutor] adapted to our questions and made space for meaningful discussions, while still covering all the course objectives,” she said. This balance allowed Emma and her team to reflect on their current practices and explore ways to make improvements.
Overall, Emma found the workshop valuable for both herself and her team. It offered practical insights she could apply immediately and sparked ideas for enhancing the way they work at Pentreath. She highly recommends the masterclasses and workshops from Truro and Penwith College’s Future Skills Institute to other businesses, believing they provide a great opportunity to grow both personally and professionally.
