Course studied: BSc (Hons) Applied Computing Technologies

Hometown: Redruth

Current Role: CRM developer and Senior IT technician for Naked Solar

My Story:

Thinking of ways to change his career, Chris visited a Careers advice day which lead him on to the Access to Higher Education, Computing course at Truro and Penwith College. After completing his access course and re-taking his English GCSE alongside this, Chris initially enrolled on the FdSc Computer Technology foundation degree with the University Centre before progressing on to the BSc degree. Since graduating, Chris has quickly developed his career in the IT industry, now working for the Cornish renewable energy company, Naked Solar as a CRM developer.

Chris said: “I chose the University Centre as I was able to study locally. Being the main parent for my child meant being close by was really important.”

“I feel I needed extra support during my studies and the support was always there, through email and phone calls when not in person. Through the pandemic, all our lecturers were moved online and the support continued.”

“The course was really flexible, as a dad and working full time as well dealing with personal matters, the course fitted around everything.”

“I left school when I was 15 and did ok in GCSE’s then went straight to work. I was always working minimum wage jobs and wanted something more. I knew I could do more”

“My degree gave me confidence in my current role and there are things that I use from the course now including working with excel and programming.”

“My advice would be to just keep chipping away, even when your struggling, just know you will get through it. I would love to do another degree.”
