After relocating to Cornwall and starting a family, mature student Johnny decided he wanted to return to education after a 7 year gap. After previosuly studying Outdoor Education with the College, Johnny decided to top up his degree with BSc (Hons) Applied Sport and Health Science at the University Centre Truro & Penwith. After gaining confidence alongside his new qualification, Johnny has continued to grown his personal training business since he graduated in 2018 and is pursuing his passion, supporting people to achieve their health and fitness goals.

He said: “I always wanted to get a degree, I just wasn’t sure if I was able to achieve it, until I came across a sports degree at the University Centre”

“I want to help people, knowledge is knowledge but not everyone has access to it. At the end of the day, I just want to help people get healthier”

“Going back as a mature student was nerve-wracking but I was quickly made to feel comfortable ready to start my learning journey”

“All of the lecturers have been great, really understanding of my situation – having a family and returning to education after such a long break”

“The support at the University Centre is better than what is on offer at a university, the tutors are so easy to approach and willing to help.”

“When I left the University Centre, I found that I had the confidence I needed to go into business and to be in the room with other professionals. It gave me the confidence to know I was dealing with clients in the right way”

“My advice to anyone thinking about it would be Do it! I was a mature student and really nervous at first, as I had been thinking about coming back for seven years”

Alongside building a new training studio and continuing his personal training business, Johnny hopes to expand into writing lifestyle pieces as well as giving professional seminars.
