My Story
Megan originally attended Richard Lander School and decided to come to Truro College because of the quality facilities standing out to her. Megan originally had plans to study Hair and Beauty, however later decided to switch to A Levels.
“Originally I wanted to come to the College to do Hair and Beauty, so I came specifically for the facilities they had for those courses, but when I switched to A Levels, I thought the facilities were amazing as well, particularly the science labs.” Megan explained.
Megan studies A Levels in Maths, Chemistry and Biology and is about to enter her second year.
“I like Maths the most, it’s very technique based – once you know the method and the steps you can do any level or difficulty of question.
“Biology is one of those subjects that gets you really far, and Chemistry is really fun and practical.”
Megan already has plans to continue her studies at university level, combining her passion for the beauty industry with the skills she’s gained through her A Level study: “I’m aiming to do Cosmetic Science at university, so learning about the manufacturing of products in the hair and beauty industry, such as skincare, makeup and haircare.
“I’m looking at Reading, which is my ideal university.”
Megan describes her favourite part of college life as: “Everything feels a lot freer – you get to make your own schedule for how you want to learn.”
“I like the College because they treat you as adults. There’s a big step between secondary school and college. They treat you as adults and expect you to act like adults.”
Outside of her studies, Megan is a Student Ambassador at the College, assisting with Open Events, student inductions, and other events to help promote the college.
“I originally saw an advertisement for an opportunity for people to apply to be a student ambassador and visit some schools to talk about what we do at college, and they didn’t have anyone from my subject area at the time. I thought to myself ‘I could do that for sure!’”
“It’s probably one of my favourite parts of college, because I’ve got a whole new group of friends I’ve made through the ambassadors. We get the opportunity to do paid summer work, and you get to know all the lecturers through talking to them at Open Days.”
Megan’s advice for future students is: “don’t be afraid to be in classes on your own – because you will find people you mesh with. Remember you’re doing something you’ve picked; you’ll find community in that.”
