My Story
With dreams of pursuing Higher Education in the Netherlands, Rochie has already showcased her creative flair during a successful work experience placement with the College’s Marketing Team.
Rochie, from Scotland, previously attended Thurso High School in the Scottish Highlands and relocated to Cornwall before starting College.
“When looking at options for college, my auntie mentioned Truro as it was closest. When I did more research, I saw how many options I had,” Rochie explained.
Rochie’s Scottish qualifications meant she needed to retake her English and Maths GCSE but praised the support she received from tutors at the College: “My maths tutors have been outstanding. Maths here is taught differently than Scotland, so I really struggled to grasp it. They were amazing – they were understanding, they helped me to pass.”
Alongside her English and Maths, Rochie began a Level 2 Media Diploma.
“I chose to study Media on a whim, and it’s genuinely changed my life,” Rochie explained. “I now have the chance of becoming a director, working hard, and going to different places.
“My favourite part of the course is the research.”
After progressing onto the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production & Technology, Rochie undertook a weeklong work experience placement with the Marketing team at Truro College, creating her own short video project diving into the world of vocational courses.
Rochie said: “I did a week’s work of experience with the Marketing Team, I knew that I loved research and finding things out, as well as putting myself out there, but wow I really liked it! It was so fun finding people to interview for my video. I’ve also learned so much about the College in the process.
“I always thought my dream role was to be an Assistant Director, but now I have done a week’s work experience with the Marketing Team at College I’m not so sure! I’ve really enjoyed it.”
Rochie describes her favourite part of her college experience as the people she’s met along the way: “I’ve met so many different people, I would’ve never met my best friend and my boyfriend if I hadn’t come to college. You meet so many people from all over Cornwall. I had a friend in English with me who came all the way from Ukraine.”
Her advice for anyone starting college is: “There are a lot of opportunities to make friends here – do an Enrichment! Jump into something else to meet new people.”
Once she finishes her Diploma, Rochie has plans to study and live abroad, as well as a long-term career dream to work on her favourite TV show.
“I’m going to move to the Netherlands to live with my brother after finishing College, and I’m planning on taking a gap year to work then heading to university to do Media and Communications at Utrecht University.
“I chose Utrecht because the degree really dives into TV – as a kid I always wanted to work on Doctor Who. Maybe I’ll work on production for that, who knows!”
