Heather, Outreach Officer for Next Steps Southwest

Developing Leaders ILM Course attendee Heather also commented:

"I have been a manager for several years in various organisations without any formal management qualifications.

The ILM Level 3 Leadership & Management course is designed to help me progress in my own practice but also reaffirm what I have already been doing. The course leader is extremely experienced and uses her industry knowledge to guide the lessons. After just two taught sessions I feel more confident in my role; it has helped me to make more objective and considered decisions which has already had a positive impact on staff development."

From the course

Nathan Bonney - Developing Leaders

Age: 32  From: Bude  Employer: Cornwall Fire & Rescue
Prior qualifications and where studied: QCSE’s, BTEC national diploma
Courses/taster sessions studied: L3 ILM Leadership & Management

If you are changing career direction, what made you decide to do this?
Having a young family motivated me to want to push forward within my work life and achieve more to provide a better life for them in a financial sense.

Was your employer supportive of your course?
Yes, the fire service is very supportive of its staff wanting to progress.

Was the initial information and guidance session through ESF Developing Leaders Project beneficial to your course and career choices?
Yes, it was helpful and gave me a good understanding of what to expect.

How did you find coming back into education while still in employment?
This was very interesting. Completing this course throughout the pandemic has been very strange. It would have been nice to do it face to face.

How did you find the smaller class sizes of likeminded individuals?
The course was run over Microsoft teams.

Was the course flexible and did you find time to fit work or family commitments around study?
The course involved lots of work. I was also going through a promotion process at work which made things a little more stressful than I had hoped. My tutor (Jo Marshall) was brilliant with this situation which allowed me to get both of these things completed.

Did you find that completing the course helped you in your everyday job?
This course has helped me massively at work. I am now in a managerial role within the fire service and have understanding of how motivating a team is vitally important as well as many other areas covered. This has helped a huge amount.

Did you progress within the company or into different employment following the course?
Yes. I was promoted to Crew manager at the end of the course. I used the knowledge and skills acquired in the ILM to help me in my application and Crew manager interview.

Do you have any helpful or interesting comments or observations for us?
I used lots of things taken from my ILM in my promotion work and certainly my interview, thankfully that helped enough for me to get the job so I was absolutely delighted the work had paid off!  Without doubt this course has helped me accomplish that.

James Napier - Developing Leaders

Employer: Gripsure
Job title: General Manager
Course: ILM L5 Leadership & Management

What were the highlights of the training?
The tutor, Rob, was brilliant at making us evaluate our own styles and understanding as well as just delivering the material.

Was the initial support and guidance through ESF Developing Leaders Project beneficial to your course and career choices?
The guidance appointment helped me to understand the requirements, particularly as the course shifted from classroom to online.

Rob’s help within the taught sessions, but also in our 1 to 1, greatly increased my understanding of the course and helped implement it within my team.

What impact has the training had on you? If you’ve been promoted, please add details of your previous and new roles.
Drastic impact – I began implementing elements of the course straight away and have seen these land with my team. I am now much stronger at looking at my management style and picking the best way to handle specific situations which has increased my confidence.

What has improved within your business? Has the training helped you with efficiencies, cost savings, staff retention, to launch new projects and services etc?
We have grown the team from four staff to seven and greatly increased our production outputs. During this process I have used a lot of the skills learnt during the course to aid with the team development and communication.

What does the future hold?
Continual development personally and a focus on growing and developing the team I manage to achieve greater successes.

Why would you recommend Truro and Penwith College Business?
The course content was engaging and delivered very well by Rob online which made it very flexible to fit in around work commitments.

Linda Norfolk - Developing Leaders

Employer: EPC Wheelchairs Ltd
Job title: Managing Director
Course: ILM L5 Leadership & Management

What were the highlights of the training?
Participating in an ILM level 5 leadership course by remote learning was unexpectedly even better than classroom learning. I thought I would miss a group interaction, but in fact, found that I focused better on our particular business needs.

The small group size meant we were all involved, and everyone got opportunity to listen and learn from each other. The group was very supportive, so it became safe to share problems and receive helpful comment.  Simple, easy sharing of learning and knowledge resources, which could be accessed at times appropriate for me.

Bite size online tutor contact (2 hrs) was easier to manage rather than taking a whole day out, (whilst also running the business... or supervising the children), and often new knowledge could be immediately applied to my situation.

Was the initial information and guidance session through ESF Developing Leaders Project beneficial to your course and career choices?
I really have appreciated the encouragement and sharing of the tutor’s business insights with us.

The pre course guidance advice helped to determine my learning needs and to select the best course for me at the time.

What impact has the training had on you? If you’ve been promoted, please add details of your previous and new roles.
So much of what the tutor taught us has helped me to pull together lots of fragments of my knowledge and now the bigger picture also makes sense. This has all been very relevant to the everyday operation of our business, and invaluable learning to put to use immediately.

Really understanding the management of change and gaining emotional intelligence around behaviours in certain circumstances has developed my skills as a leader.

What has improved within your business? Has the training helped you with efficiencies, cost savings, staff retention, to launch new projects and services etc?
I will be trying to fix a few problems in the team work, empowering them and demonstrating trust, whilst guiding them to be a bit more efficient and effective ... of course!

What does the future hold?
After the Covid pandemic I’ve learned not to predict too much!  We are taking considered steps as we recovery, but the whole team is really pulling together as a we emerge into a re-shaped market. I think we are in a much stronger position to adapt and grow successfully than we were.

Why would you recommend Truro and Penwith College Business?
The delivery of this course was very easy to access, and the course material was relevant and current. I gained so much from discussion with my fellow students and from the course tutor. The material really makes you think about your own approaches and situation, but also equips you with knowledge to develop. It was good value, a very positive experience, and a lot of fun too.

Sarah Williams - Developing Leaders

Employer: Royal Cornwall Hospital
Job title: Reception Services Manager
Course: ILM Level 5 Leadership and Management

What were the highlights of the training?
Our group were diverse in terms of employment background which was really useful during group discussions as we had different viewpoints to share.

Was the initial information and guidance session through ESF Developing Leaders Project beneficial to your course and career choices?
The project/course was great as they provided all the ‘need to know’ information in advance of the course and in my case, due to my difficulties I have with reading small text, accommodated me by supplying hard copies of information in larger print for my ease of reading which I thought was really helpful. Our tutor was great as he took on board the fact that our group came from different employment backgrounds and therefore looked to apply leadership theories in contexts that would be applicable in our respective settings. My own manager was supportive of my attendance and had authorised time away from the office to undertake studies.

What impact has the training had on you? If you’ve been promoted please add details of your previous and new roles.
The impact of the training has been significant; at the time I undertook the course I was an Executive Assistant to two Directors and I had applied for a Management role within the Trust during the course and subsequently went on to become Reception Services Manager.

What has improved within your business? Has the training helped you with efficiencies, cost savings, staff retention, to launch new projects and services etc?
The training has been effective in terms of managing a large team; in my previous role I managed a team of 3 and  now manage a team of 48 and so studying the different leadership styles has been of huge benefit as a ‘one size fits all’ approach is not always the best way forward! During the period of time I have been in the new role I have launched a new induction program for our new starters which has gone some way to ensure we retain well trained staff for longer as they feel more supported in the workplace and with their own training needs.

What does the future hold?
I have just started a Chartered Managers Degree apprenticeship which is running concurrently with my full time role and I hope to progress further to become a senior manager within the Trust.

Why would you recommend Truro and Penwith College Business?
I would thoroughly recommend Truro and Penwith College Business as I feel that the courses are relevant and well resourced; the whole team, from the administration staff to tutors are well informed and approachable and I would happily undertake further training when I have the time!

Andrew Lee - Developing Leaders

Job title: Operations Manager
Course: ILM Management Level 5

What were the highlights of the training?
The course has given me the opportunity, by the use of different management styles, to reflect on how I conduct my role, reflect on the direction of the business and most importantly reflect on our people, who are our biggest asset.

Was the information and guidance session through ESF Developing Leaders Project beneficial to your course and career choices?
Rob’s delivery of the course is both forward thinking and easy to understand. Rob challenges your ideas and thinking and as a neutral 3rd party, presents different challenges and solutions to processes, we are already running. His training has empowered me to adjust my thinking, especially around tasks Vs People Management in a holistic manner.

The communication with the college is fantastic. We have found all members of the college team accessible, welcoming, and forward thinking. We would not hesitate to reach out to any member of the team.

My manager has challenged me on subjects of the course. How can I implement in the office environment? What is the added value of outside learning? And how to develop further leaders in the future?

What impact has the training had on you? If you’ve been promoted, please add details of your previous and new roles.
The key component in any learning, is what the learner takes on board and how they apply the learning! The course and training allowed me to reflect on a number of our processes and how as a young forward-thinking office we can continue our path of growth. There is no rule book on how to grow a business, the college has given us many tools in how to add value to our people and business.

What has improved within your business? Has the training helped you with efficiencies, cost savings, staff retention, to launch new projects and services etc?
Alongside other team members who have completed courses at Truro & Penwith College, we have felt empowered by the courses. The ideas bucket is now full! Our ideas regarding people management, process manager and efficiencies as a business is stronger because of the courses.

Our new Training and Development department has developed into a more efficient department. As a result of what our team has learnt at college, and how they have implemented these ideas into actions.

What does the future hold?
To build our relationship with Truro & Penwith College going forward. It is our vision that we give every staff member the opportunity to develop their career. We see Truro & Penwith College as a leading educational provider of quality training courses, delivering the best quality courses with the best quality value.

Why would you recommend Truro and Penwith College Business?
The leadership of the college and its team is second to none. Providing great training facilities alongside making participants feel welcomed, valued and a real sense of empowerment. The value of people can never be underestimated in any team. We believe Truro & Penwith College brings out the best in our team.
