Throughout this course, you will develop your knowledge and understanding in a range of skills and techniques, alongside developing interpersonal skills that will assist you in communicating effectively with clients and understand the expectations required when in the industry. This one-year qualification is mainly a practical course, using a variety of teaching methods including discussions, demonstrations, and presentations. You will work on your own, in pairs and in small groups practicing techniques within a realistic working environment in well equipped, purpose-built salons.

What will i learn?
The hair qualification includes carrying out a client consultation service, shampooing, blow-drying, setting, dressing hair and using temporary colour.
The beauty therapy qualification includes client consultation, skincare, manicure, pedicure, nail art, make-up and health and safety.
Where will it take me?
On completion of this course, you could progress onto a Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing, Level 2 Beauty Therapy and Level 2 Apprenticeships at Truro and Penwith College. Career opportunities include becoming a hairdressing junior or beauty assistant in a salon.
assessment arrangements
Your achievement in this qualification is dependent upon excellent attendance, punctuality and effort. You will study in a friendly atmosphere, using a variety of assessment methods:
- Most assessments are completed through practical observations of skills and techniques. This will be carried out throughout all your units, as you continuously strive to work towards a competent level of client hairdressing services.
- You will be assessed regularly on written theory work that may be conducted within the class, or as a homework activity and feedback will be continuously provided on your progress.
- Your performance will be reviewed during 1:1 session with your personal tutor.
- Mock examinations will also be undertaken on each unit throughout your course preparing you for the next level of development and on-line exams

All units in this qualification are graded Fail/Pass/Merit/Distinction by:

We encourage you to practice your skills away from College, where possible and to utilize the online resources provided by the College for guidance.
In addition, we expect you to conduct your own research, during set home study activities to enhance your understanding of understanding of products and the science behind hairdressing. However, we will also offer you opportunities to conduct this research at College.
You will need salon uniform and specific equipment; full advice will be given on these before the start of your course.
Employability skills and professional standards are a strong focus throughout this qualification allowing progression opportunities on to the next stage of learning within the hair and beauty sector.
Learners are required to purchase a full kit, and uniform upon acceptance on the Level 1 course.
