Employer: MY Compliance Management Ltd
Job Title: Head of Customer Support
Course: ILM Level 5 Award in Leadership and Management
My story:
The College’s ILM Level 5 Award in Leadership and Management has given Alistair the tools to manage his time more efficiently and to harness significant growth within his team as a more open, effective and motivating manager.
Alistair said: “The support received from the college was brilliant. Our course tutor Samantha was always at the end of an email, and would stay on the call in case any of us wanted to have a chat if there was anything we were worried about. Samantha also supported with the checking of draft work which gave me the confidence to complete the assignments. With the useful resources on the Truro College Portal, I don’t think there was anything left untouched.
“For me, studying at Truro College was a really positive experience. There was a time where I had a tight deadline with work on the same day as an assignment deadline. My tutor worked with me to make sure the assignment was done but didn’t affect my deadline in the business.
“I think the course has helped to improve the business in terms of giving me the tools to be more efficient in my time management and as my team has grown a lot over the past 6 months, I have learnt how to be a more effective, open and motivating manager.”
Alistair attended one of the College’s ESF Higher Level Skills Taster Days before applying to start the qualification, providing him with a head start on what would be expected of him, research methods and Harvard referencing that supported the work he needed to complete.
Alistair continued: “I signed up to one of the College’s ESF Higher Level Skills Taster Days which allowed me to understand a bit more about what was required of me and gave me some great tools for things like Harvard Referencing, which I hadn’t done since school, and research methods, which gave me a head start on what I needed to do to succeed in the course. The skills and induction day was extremely useful and gave me the confidence to enrol.
“The highlights for me were how the tutor used a mixture of group sessions to network and share ideas with other course attendees, and the real-life examples that enabled me to relate my experiences in my role to support with my evidence in the assignments.”
Alistair plans to continue to develop his managerial skills with the College and make a difference to his workplace and team, progressing to the ILM Level 7 Award in Leadership and Management.
When asked why he would recommend Truro College, he said: “For someone who thought they were too old and had been out of education for too long to ever do any further training, Truro and Penwith College creates a supportive environment where the tutors encourage discussions between learners which made the training really engaging.”
