Employer: Watergate Bay Hotel
Job title: Reservations Supervisor
Course: ILM Level 5 Award in Leadership and Management
My Story
Beth studied ILM Level 5 Leadership & Management alongside her full-time job as Reservations Supervisor at Watergate Bay Hotel.
Reflecting on her course, Beth says the highlights of her training were “having the time and space to reflect on my work and how I want to work in the future. By removing myself from the office, it was easier to recognise where I can improve.
“The assignments gave me the perfect opportunity (and excuse) to learn more about my company, and why we do what we do as a business and brand.”
Describing her course as “a real eye-opener”, Beth was full of praise for the lecturing staff at the College as well as the balance she was able to find between her full-time job and studies.
“Richie (Tutor) was great, he answered all of my queries, listened to my thought process, and made me and my opinion feel valued in the sessions and was on hand to confirm I was on the right track when I thought I was way out of place. My manager gave me time to focus on my assignments in my workday, and it felt like everyone on the Watergate Bay team joined in to answer my queries for the second assignment.”
Beth now has the confidence to discuss new viewpoints and ways of thinking to help improve the efficiencies of her department. She agrees her team is “stronger and more confident” for the skills she has learned.
“It’s improved my confidence with the team and individuals on a people basis, it’s widened my perspective. I know I lack in management experience, but I also know now that I can do a management role, and this has helped me, and will help me reach that goal. I’m much more socially aware but also more aware (and proud) of the company that I work for”.
Beth’s next goal is to apply for a management role at Watergate Bay Hotel.
When asked why she would recommend Truro and Penwith College Business, Beth says, “At first, I thought I was mad going back to ‘school’ and taking on more ‘work’ outside of a full-time job. But I enjoyed every part, from the sessions to the assignments, and the conversations were enlightening. It was a great opportunity that I am so glad I did!”
