“don’t let yourself be put off by the idea of staying in Cornwall – I think people get put off by the idea of Cornwall being very familiar to them and want to explore something new, but familiarity isn’t always a bad thing.”

Hometown: Truro
Course: BA (Hons) Applied Media
Next Steps: Continuing to develop and launch his own clothing brand, pursuing a career in video editing, or working for a production company.
BA (Hons) Applied Media student Claud has created his own clothing brand, thanks to the skills he’s learned throughout his time at the University Centre Truro and Penwith.
Claud previously studied the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business at Truro College.
Upon finishing his diploma, Claud decided to stay local and enrol on the FdA Film, Media, and Photography course at the University Centre Truro and Penwith. He then progressed to the BA (Hons) Applied Media top-up degree and is due to graduate in October 2024.
Claud commented: “The option to study at the University Centre was really helpful as my parents live in Cornwall, so I could stay at home, save some money and also it’s familiar as I used to go to college on the Truro campus.”
Alongside his studies, and combining the knowledge learned through both his Business Diploma and Media degree, Claud has also developed his own clothing brand, Saucepot Clothing, and has launched a range of t-shirts as part of the BA Applied Media final exhibition showcase, which was held at Gray’s Wharf Studios in Penryn.
“My brand is all set up and everything’s getting off the ground – being a student and working part time as well it’s a lot to manage, but everything is going steadily. We launched the line of t-shirts that were showcased on 20 May. This exhibition is the first time we’ve had it on show somewhere.”
Speaking of the exhibition, titled ‘Four’, Claud explained: “I wanted to showcase everything I’ve learned and created over the last three years of university. I have three photos I did in the first year of the course to showcase my photography side and I also made an introspective conversation video between myself and another version of myself, talking about my past and what brought me to be the creative I am today. As a tactile installation element, I have got six T-shirts that I designed and four pairs of shoes I painted to tie in what I want to do after university, hopefully to exemplify and showcase that as my chosen career path.”
Claud’s advice for students considering staying and studying locally is: “don’t let yourself be put off by the idea of staying in Cornwall – I think people get put off by the idea of Cornwall being very familiar to them and want to explore something new, but familiarity isn’t always a bad thing.”
After completing his course, Claud hopes to continue to develop his clothing brand alongside pursuing a video editing career for YouTube or working for a production company.
