Course: Access to Science
Progression: Veterinary Science, Bristol University
My Story:
After completing A levels at Truro College in Maths, Chemistry and Geography in 2019, Phoebe was unsure on what to do next. It was after deciding on a gap year with the idea of doing a ski season that the Covid 19 pandemic hit meaning her upcoming plans were put on hold. It wasn’t until she started her job at Springfields fun park and pony centre that she thought about how she could turn her passion for animal care into a career with the help of an Access diploma.
Phoebe said: “After my plans changed due to Covid, I manged to get a local job and a small animal centre and fun park, where I spent a lot of time working and caring for animals. After a couple of months there I realised a career working with animals was something I really wanted to pursue.”
“I started researching possible higher education in veterinary and thought university would the best next step. However, with the A levels I choose I wasn’t able to apply. So, with further research I found the Access to science course, aimed towards mature students wanting to go into higher education.”
“This course has been challenging but has taught me many valuable skills such as lab skills and presentation skills, which I will need in university.”
“I have made great friends through the course, who have encouraged me and helped me achieve my place at university.”
“It is the perfect steppingstone to university and gave me an opportunity to apply for a degree I was passionate about. With the help of my tutors and lectures I applied for Veterinary medicine/science degrees and managed to get 3 interviews and two offers!”
“I would encourage anyone thinking about doing the access course to do it, it opens so many doors to further possibilities in education.”
