Name: Sue Trebilcock
Courses: Bsc (Hons) Applied Computing Technologies
From leaving school over 50 years ago, to having now completed her BSc (Hons) in Applied Computing Technologies, Sue Trebilcock’s academic ascent at the University Centre Truro & Penwith is one steeped in ambition and tenacity.
Vowing to one-day complete her schooling and pursue her academic ambitions, Sue made her return to education in order to attain GCSEs in Maths and English, alongside studying ‘Access to HE: Computing’. With a long-held enthusiasm for computing, Sue knew that achieving these qualifications would propel her towards a degree-level course in an industry that otherwise would have continued to elude her.
Following the successful conclusion of a two-year period studying FdSc Cyber Security, Sue has now completed her BSc (Hons) in Applied Computing Technologies, fulfilling an ambition conceived over half-a-century ago.
Upon receiving her grades on Results Day, Sue said: “I’ve been here for four years, and it’s been the most incredible journey. I’ve met some wonderful people – all my peers and the staff. I’m so sad it’s over!”
Sue particularly praised the inclusive environment at the University Centre Truro & Penwith, commenting: “At some universities it’s as if you’re just a number. It seems you just go to lectures, take notes and don’t get much feedback; there’s a detachment of sorts. But here, the tutors genuinely get to know us. It’s so easy to ask questions and seek help if you need it. It meant a lot to someone like me who was making a big leap back into education.”
Sue was keen to speak on the value of studying for a degree that focuses on an industry extensively rooted in modern society. Being a mature student, she found that her first-hand experience in witnessing the evolution of the digital era, in which many are now accustomed to, has only amplified her interests.
“Things are changing so quickly; Artificial Intelligence is an extremely relevant example of that. Things are coming on by leaps and bounds, so now is a perfect time for people to get involved.”
On offering advice for current and prospective students from all backgrounds, Sue remarked: “The staff, the courses, the atmosphere – it’s just brilliant. I’m an example of someone who’s re-entered academics in a more unconventional way, so I can really address the importance of asking questions. Don’t ever be afraid to ask for help because, ultimately, everyone is in the same position as you.” Overall, my advice for anyone would be simple – go for it!”
