Martyn – Biscovey Garage Ltd

Facing digital MOT changes, Martyn chose to lead rather than follow. The 4 day intensive MOT course gave him cutting-edge testing skills and an individual license. Now he can test vehicles himself and mentor apprentices more effectively, proving that in today's motor trade, continuous learning is the key to staying ahead.

“The course gave me exactly what I needed with structured training delivered efficiently that has made me more versatile within my own business."

Job Role: Director and Owner

Employer: Biscovey Garage Ltd

As the director and owner of Biscovey Garage Ltd, Martyn understands the importance of maintaining up-to-date industry knowledge. When NAPA’s area representative for garage equipment and training recommended the Class 4 and 7 MOT Tester course at Truro and Penwith College, he recognised an opportunity to refresh his skills while adapting to the industry’s digital transformation.

Martyn’s motivation for undertaking the course stemmed from both practical business needs and professional development goals. With years of experience in the automotive sector, he wanted to ensure he could personally conduct MOT tests when needed, providing valuable cover during staff absences.

“The shift to digital testing procedures meant I needed proper training to stay fully competent,” Martyn explained. ”Plus, with testers now holding individual licences rather than garage-based ones, it made sense to qualify in my own right.”

The four-day block delivery format proved ideal for Martyn’s schedule. For someone with his experience, an intensive course worked perfectly. ”I could dedicate focused time to training without prolonged disruption to the business,” he noted.

The small group setting and Geoff’s expert tuition received particular praise. ”Geoff had a real talent for making complex content accessible to everyone, regardless of their starting point,” Martyn observed. ”The smaller group meant we could move at a good pace while still getting individual attention when needed.”

Martyn was particularly impressed by how the course created valuable opportunities for Truro and Penwith College’s full-time students who participated as MOT assistants. ”It was fantastic to see the next generation getting hands-on experience and making industry connections,” he said. ”Those conversations about real-world challenges are exactly what young technicians need.”

For automotive professionals considering similar development, Truro and Penwith College’s MOT tester courses offer a proven pathway to maintaining expertise in this essential field.
