Course: Access to Science
Progression: Dental Hygiene Therapy Degree
My Story:
Prior to starting the course, Stephanie was working full time as a dental nurse and was looking to progress her career in the dental industry. She had a degree in Photography, a NEBDN Qualification in Dental Nursing and driven by her passion for progressing her career, Stephanie pursued Biology and Maths GCSE’s obtained as an adult to meet degree entry requirements.
The Access to Science course enabled Stephanie to attain a level 3 qualification which will enable her to apply to study a Dental Hygiene Therapy at university.
Stephanie said: “I thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of the Access course, in particular learning all about the intricate mechanisms of human biology. Although challenging at times, the chemistry aspect of the course has been incredibly rewarding. I really enjoyed the chemistry practical lessons which demonstrated the theory taught in class.”
“Working to deadlines in a timely manner and delegating my time effectively really triggered a lot of stress and anxiety throughout the course. Despite this, with support I was able to learn new coping strategies which enabled me to focus and work more efficiently.”
“I have learnt valuable proficiency in laboratory skills and mathematics, including data analysis and interpretation. I have also learnt how to use Harvard referencing and vastly improved my essay writing skills. The biochemistry aspects of the course have really prepared me for a degree in dental hygiene therapy.”
Stephanie’s advice to future Access students is: “Stay focused, attend every lesson, and take all the support you are offered. The access course runs for approximately 9 months and is challenging at times. However, give 100 percent to the course, do not get behind on assignments and give it your best, it really is worth it.”
