Course: Skills Bootcamp in Property Maintenance
With a creative background in 3D design, furniture making, and interior styling, Jen wanted to expand her skills to offer more comprehensive services to her clients. After browsing the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) website, she discovered the Skills Bootcamp in Property Maintenance, a government-funded programme designed to help individuals gain in-demand trade skills.
For Jen, the decision to enrol was a no-brainer. “I knew that taking a day off work would mean a short-term loss of income, but the long-term benefits far outweighed that,” she explained. “The fact that the course was fully funded made it an even more attractive opportunity.”
Jen was impressed by the practical, hands-on approach of the bootcamp. Unlike online tutorials, this training allowed her to practice real-world skills under the guidance of an experienced tutor.
“The best thing about the course was learning new things that I hadn’t done before and being able to try them with supervision and guidance,” Jen said. She particularly enjoyed mastering tasks like basic plumbing, plastering, and electrical safety, skills that had previously been outside her comfort zone.
The structured yet flexible learning environment suited her busy schedule, and she found the tutor patient, knowledgeable, and encouraging.
Since completing the bootcamp, Jen has been able to widen her service offerings, making her business more competitive. She now combines her interior design expertise with her new property maintenance skills, allowing her to take on bigger projects, such as full room refurbishments, rather than just small repair jobs.
“Before, I’d have to turn down work if it involved plumbing or plastering. Now, I can confidently take on those jobs, which means more income and happier clients,” she said.
Jen would recommend the Skills Bootcamp to others considering the course, and remarked, “Take this course! You’ll learn so much and gain the confidence to do more.”
