Course: Multiply – Refresh

Job Role: Construction Lecturer

Construction Lecturer Michelle (Mish) recently achieved a significant milestone in her academic journey by passing the Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths. Her success was greatly supported by the dedicated guidance and resources provided by Truro and Penwith College’s Multiply Team.

Mish had previously attempted to pass the Level 2 Maths exam several times without success, leading to feelings of frustration and disappointment. Despite her best efforts, the elusive pass mark remained out of reach, affecting her confidence in her mathematical abilities.

Determined to overcome these setbacks, Mish eagerly signed up for one-to-one support with Asun, a tutor provided by the Multiply project at Truro and Penwith College. This decision marked a pivotal moment in her journey towards achieving her goal.

Reflecting on her decision, Mish noted: “Although I had received a lot of support previously, when 1:1 support with Asun was suggested to me, I was willing to take any extra help offered.” This marked a turning point, as the focused attention from Asun provided the tailored guidance Mish needed.

She emphasised the significant impact the Multiply programme had on boosting her confidence, particularly in addressing the non-calculator aspect of the exam.

Mish explained: “Asun took the time to explain to me how to work through the non-calculator questions using tried and tested techniques that were easy and quick to understand.”

The tailored support Mish received from Asun played a crucial role in rebuilding her confidence. By the end of the course, Mish felt more self-assured in her mathematical abilities, especially regarding the non-calculator section of the exam. This newfound confidence was instrumental in her success.

Mish’s journey offers valuable insights and advice for others facing similar challenges. She emphasises the importance of perseverance, utilising available resources, and working outside of the one-to-one sessions. She recalled: “Asun also gave me additional problems to work through at home, ensuring I thoroughly understood these techniques.”

This extra effort helped reinforce Mish’s learning and better prepare her for the exam. Her key recommendations include taking any support offered by the College, attending as many classes as possible, working through old exam papers and creating flashcards with formulas, descriptions and examples.

Mish’s success story is an inspiring example of how personalised, targeted support can make a significant difference in overcoming academic hurdles. Her experience with the Multiply project underscores the importance of perseverance, coupled with the right guidance, in achieving educational goals.

Her advice to others facing similar challenges? “Just keep going and never give up, you will pass the Maths!”
