Niki successfully completed her Level 3 marketing Apprenticeship in July 2018 and in just over two years, now heads-up the Hospitality Table Cornwall project, part of the College’s £6.8 million ESF (European Social Fund) Business Clusters project.
Niki secured a full-time permanent job as the Marketing and Events Coordinator at Hospitality Table Cornwall (HTC) after successfully completing her Apprenticeship in the College’s Marketing and Communications team.
After enjoying a successful two years in the marketing and events position Niki was offered an enhanced dual role, spending one day a week working as the Project Coordinator due to a colleague reducing their hours.
The Project Coordinator role became vacant in November 2020 and Niki successfully applied to take on the position full-time and now manages the entire HTC project.
The Project works with employers in Hospitality and Hair and Beauty to develop fully funded pilot courses and events that develop skills employers need to tackle skills shortages. The Project also promotes working in both industries to raise aspirations and encourage people of all ages to pursue successful careers.
Niki commented: “I love being able to work with and manage our Marketing Assistant and get involved with coordinating marketing and event plans for the Project. I also look after the Project plan and oversee course creation that is looked after by the College’s Curriculum Developers and Training & Development Consultants, while reporting back to wider teams across College. A lot of what I do relies on the rest of the team, it's very much a team effort and I believe we are doing fantastic things for the industries!”
Niki followed the Apprenticeship route after deciding that university wasn’t for her, instead opting to earn while working towards her next qualification.
After completing A Levels in Psychology, English Language and Media, and an AS in Business Studies at Truro and Penwith College, Niki’s passion for photography and videography along with a desire to understand how a business attracts its customers encouraged her to apply for an Apprentice Marketing Assistant position in the College’s Marketing and Communications team and she hasn’t looked back!
Niki feels her greatest achievements during her Apprenticeship include being shortlisted and highly commended at the Cornwall Apprenticeship Awards and overcoming some of her personal struggles with support from her colleagues.
“During my Apprenticeship I helped to organise the Cornwall Apprentice Awards in 2017. I created all sixteen of the videos for the awards ceremony and got to attend as a guest after being shortlisted for an award. It was really nice to sit there and see my work on screen”, said Niki.
Niki continued: “I also gained a lot of confidence by pushing myself and attending meetings with business leaders and senior members of staff by myself. I also found the confidence to speak in public and became a College ambassador for Apprenticeships, talking in front of parents and future Apprentices at the College’s Open Events. This was really difficult at first, but it got easier each time and now it’s something I wouldn’t think twice about doing.
“The team at Truro and Penwith College were so supportive throughout my Apprenticeship, both as an employer and as a learning provider. I was assigned a mentor, a tutor and a line manager so I always knew who to go to if I had any questions.
“My colleagues were also really helpful, everyone has a different approach to marketing and it’s great to pick up various skills from each person.
“I wouldn’t have been able to secure my new role without my Apprenticeship and the experience I’ve gained through the College, I’m excited for what is to come in the future of my marketing career!”
