Apprentice Sam Weedon wins Apprentice of the Year at the Cornwall Manufacturers Awards having only been in an Apprenticeship for two months at Daften Die-Casting.
Sam Weedon 17 from Wadebridge, studied an Extended Diploma in Engineering at Truro and Penwith College after completing his GCSEs and secured himself a Saturday job at at Daften Die-Casting, a family run die-casting and power-coating business in Wadebridge to support his studies, taking any opportunity to move around the factory and develop his skills in as many areas as possible.
Impressed with the level of Sam’s work, Daften Die-Casting offered him an Apprenticeship job on completion of his fulltime studies, allowing him to take his first step on the career ladder while continuing to gain nationally recognised qualifications. Daften’s faith in Sam paid off, after submitting a nomination to the Cornwall Manufacturers Awards just two months into his Apprenticeship saw him crowned Apprentice of the Year at the recent awards evening at the Atlantic Hotel in Newquay.
Sam said: “Winning the Apprentice of the Year category was extremely unexpected considering the standards of the other nominees. It’s great to be acknowledged for the effort I have put into my work – I’m excited for the future and the possibilities the Apprenticeship has already given me. “
