Level 2 Hairdressing Apprentice Shannon O’regan 17 from St Columb started her Saturday job at Marzipan Hair in Truro and soon realised that Hairdressing was her dream career.
Shannon decided to progress on to an Apprenticeship with Marzipan to gain confidence and get an equal balance of working and learning in a real working environment.
An Apprenticeship has really pushed me to achieve things that I initially thought it couldn’t. It enables you to communicate with clients and in the industry you’re constantly meeting new people.
Finishing 2nd place in the Cornish Skills competition, Shannon is involved in multiple aspects of Marzipan Hair and has helped to train her younger sister, who now works at Marzipan on Saturdays. She has even taught experienced members of staff new techniques, including her manager who has been in the industry for over 18 years.
Her nominator Hannah Thomas, Manager at Marzipan Hair said: “The minute we met Shannon, the team knew she would be a dream Apprentice. She has taught me new styling techniques and I've been hairdressing for 18 years - I believe Shannon is a future star!”
Shannon won not only Hairdressing Apprentice of the Year at the 2017 Cornwall Apprenticeship Awards but also overall Apprentice of the Year.
Shannon continued: “Winning 2nd place in the Cornish Skills competition and winning Hair and Beauty Apprentice of the Year including overall Apprentice of the Year in the 2017 Cornwall Apprenticeship Awards are huge achievements of my Apprenticeship journey so far. It feels amazing to think that my hard work has been recognised.”
Shannon plans to go onto her Level 3 Apprenticeship in Hairdressing with Marzipan and wants to work on building her own client base.
